Trip Report 9-9-06
Excitement ran high as we loaded up the boat. We were expecting Friday's good weather to hold for Saturday. We were heading offshore to the wreck of the Varranger, sunk in 140 Ft. of water. The boat traveled easily as we steamed 30 miles to the site.
The surface vis was outstanding !! I could see at least 50 Ft. down the line. Shawn and Tim jumped in to set the hook. In short order the "bag was up" Again the sea was so calm we used a stern anchor. Slowly the divers suited up to make their dives. Finally over an hour after we were tied in, the last diver splashed. On the bottom the water was a comfortable 58 Deg., rising up to the mid 70s on the hang. The Vis was around 25 Ft.
As the divers completed their decompression they returned to the surface, one at a time. Some bearing artifacts, some dinner. Denise from Blue water was High scorer with a total of three nice bugs. But not with out a few battle scars to show for it. She bagged a nice 5 pounder, but not before he tried to bag her first. That looks like it is gonna hurt for a few days. The divers enjoyed lunch on calm seas as the boat rocked gently. Today was a good day to be a dive boat Captain. I made an announcement that all divers were to be back on board the boat by 2 PM. This would allow us time to get back, and refuel the boat before the fuel dock closed.
The divers returned to the ocean for a second dive in small groups. On the bottom, the temperature remained warm, but the vis had dropped off a little. Most of the divers returned to the boat by two PM. I impose a penalty for late combers. A case of diet Pepsi for being late, and each additional ten minuets after that. RJ. returned 10 min. late. But Hugh and his wife Karen took the prize by being 25 Min. late. Once every one was onboard. Tim went in & cut the hook free.
Captain Rich steered for the inlet, guiding us in thru the breakwater. We backed into the slip around 5 PM. The crew quickly got busy filling tanks for Sunday's dive. It was almost 7:30 PM by the time we finished, and got fuel. After a good dinner, we all hit our bunks hard.
